About Me

Hi!

My name is Rebecca Knight, and I am a student at Oregon State University. I am majoring in Oceanography and minoring in Fisheries and Wildlife with the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences. I'm originally from Bend.

In the summer of 2019, I began to study whales. My mom showed me a picture of a captive orca and I proceeded to research and identify the roughly 285 orcas who have ever lived in captivity, and became interested in wild whales not long after. I stayed up until the early hours of the morning creating notecards and studying the world's captive and wild orcas.

Since then, I have been learning everything I can about killer whales and their natural histories. I believe these animals possess an intrinsic value as individuals and offer us an almost uncanny connection to our kin on this earth.

The purpose of this website is to educate anyone who may visit it about killer whales, to the best of my abilities. I also want to use it as a portfolio for all that I have learned, to showcase my dedication and knowledge about the species.

I want to study wild whales (someday!) My goal, in a larger sense is to help create a culture of respect and value towards cetaceans and other marine mammals.

Questions? Comments? Concerns? Want your photos featured?

If you would like me to feature your photos on the site, I would be honored! If you photograph wild whales in the Pacific Northwest, especially Northern Residents, please let me know! If you photograph Antarctic, Norwegian or New Zealander whales, please drop me a line! Thank you so much.

If you have other questions or corrections, as well as any information you think I should know, please don't hesitate to reach out! I would love to hear from you. If you use the little purple 'message' icon, anything you write goes to my email, so that is a great way to reach me! You can also message me through Instagram if that suits you. My instagram handle is @learnaboutwhales
