K pod is the smallest pod of the Southern Residents.

About Sequim

Sequim is a female in K pod who was born in 1972 to K-4 Morgan. She is the leader of a small pod consisting of her children and grandchild, referred to as the K12s. Her daughters are K22 Sekiu, K43 Saturna, and her son is K37 Rainshadow. Her grandson, Sekiu’s son, is K33 Tika.

Sequim is named for Sequim, Washington. 

K-14 Lea

About Lea

Lea is a female in K pod who was born in 1977. Her mother was K3 Sounder and her father was J1 Ruffles. For the first ~7years of her life, Lea was known to be female. Then, when she was about 11, they changed her name to Leon, because researchers believed she was a male due to her tall dorsal fin. They changed her back to her original Lea when she was seen with calves. 

Her sister is K16 Opus. Her sons are K26 Lobo and K42 Kelp, and her daughter is K36 Yoda. Her nephew, K16 Opus’s son, is K35 Sonata. Lea has closed saddle patches and a very small nick at the base of her dorsal fin. 

K-16 Opus

About Opus

Opus is a female in K pod who was born in 1985 to K3 Sounder. Her sister is K14 Lea, and her son is 

K35 Sonata. K14 Lea and Opus don’t spend much time together. Lea has a niece, K36 Yoda, and two nephews, K26 Lobo and K42 Kelp.

K-20 Spock

Mother: K13 Skagit

Sex: Female

Year of Birth: 1986

About Spock

Spock is a female in K pod who was born in 1986, to K13 Skagit, who died in 2017. Her son is K38 Comet, and she is the mother of the youngest calf in K Pod, K45, born in 2022. Her brother is K34 Cali, and her sister is K27 Deadhead. Her brother, K25 Scoter, died in 2019. 

Spock has open saddle patches on both her left and right sides.

K-22 Sekiu

About Lobo

Lobo is a male in K pod who was born in 1993. His mother is K14 Lea. His brother is K42 Kelp and his sister is K36 Yoda. His aunt is K16 Opus, and his cousin is K35 Sonata. Lobo is the Latin word for 'wolf'. 

K-27 Deadhead

About Deadhead

Deadhead is a female in K pod. She was born in 1994 and her mother was K13 Skagit, who died in 2017. Her father was J1 Ruffles. Her brother is K34 Cali, her sister is K20 Spock.  Deadhead’s brother, K25 Scoter, died in 2019. Her nephew is K20’s son, K38 Comet. Deadhead had a son, K44 Ripple (b. 2011, d. 2022). Deadhead has no notches in her dorsal fin and closed saddle patches. 

Deadhead is named for the band 'Grateful Dead,' as she was named not long after their lead singer, Jerry Garcia, passed away. 

K-33 Tika

About Tika

Tika is a male in K pod. His mother is K22 Sekiu, and he was born in 2001. His father was L41 Mega. His grandmother is K12 Sequim. Tika has an aunt and an uncle who are both younger than him, K43 Saturna, and K27 Rainshadow. 

K-34 Cali

About Cali

Cali is a male in K pod. His mother was K13 Skagit, and he was born in 2001. His father was L41 Mega. His mother died in 2017. His sisters are K27 Deadhead and K20 Spock. His brother, K25 Scoter, died in 2019. His nephew is K38 Comet.

K-35 Sonata

Sonata is a male in K pod. He was born in 2002 to K16 Opus, and is her only calf. His father was L41 Mega and his aunt is K14 Lea. His cousins, Lea’s children, are K26 Lobo, K42 Kelp, and K36 Yoda.

About Yoda

Yoda is a female in K pod. Her mother is K14 Lea and she was born in 2003. Her father was L41 Mega and her brothers are K26 Lobo and K42 Kelp. Her aunt is K16 Opus, and her cousin is K35 Sonata. Yoda has closed saddle patches and no perceivable notches on her dorsal fin. Yoda was named after the well-known Star Wars character. 

K-37 Rainshadow

About Rainshadow

Rainshadow is a male in K pod. His mother is K12 Sequim, and he was born in 2004. His father was J1 Ruffles. He has two sisters, K22 Sekiu and K43 Saturna. His nephew is K33 Tika, but Tika is actually older than Rainshadow. Rainshadow is also my adoptee for the Whale Museum's whale symbolic adoption program. About Comet

Comet is a male in K pod. His mother is K20 Spock, and he was born in 2004. He has a little sibling, K45, born in 2022. His uncle is K34 Cali, and he has an aunt, K27 Deadhead. Comet has closed saddle patches. He has no notches on his dorsal fin. 

K-42 Kelp

Statistics

Mother: K14 Lea

Father: L41 Mega

Sex: Male

Year of Birth: 2008

Age: 15

Living Siblings: K26 Lobo and K36 Yoda


About Kelp

Kelp is a male in K pod. He was born in 2008, and his mother is K14 Lea. His father was L41 Mega, his brother is K26 Lobo, and his sister is K36 Yoda. His aunt is K16 Opus, and so his cousin in K35 Sonata. Kelp’s dorsal fin is unnotched and he has closed saddle patches. Kelp has recently began to sprout his dorsal fin. Kelp was (obviously) named after the seaweed, which orcas love to play with.

K-43 Saturna

Sex: Female

Year of Birth: 2010

Age: 13

Living Siblings: K22 Sekiu and K37 Rainshadow


About Saturna

Saturna is a female in K pod. She was born in 2010 to K12 Sequim, and her father was J1 Ruffles. Saturna’s sister is K22 Sekiu, and her brother is K37 Rainshadow, whom she is close with. Her nephew is Sekiu’s son, K33 Tika, but Tika is actually older than Saturna. She is named for Saturna Island. 

K-45

Statistics

Mother: K20 Spock

Sex: Unknown

Year of Birth: 2022

Age: 1


About K45

K45 was born in the spring of 2022 and is the first calf to be born in the pod in 11 years. The calf's sex is not known, and the calf has not yet been named. During sightings, the calf seemed to be healthy, energetic, and in good body condition.
