MarineLand Canada

MarineLand has the largest collection of belugas in the world, with over 40 whales. Currently, belugas are dying off and being born with no public announcements, no records. MarineLand recently exported five of their young belugas to the Mystic. Havok died, and another is gravely ill.

About Skyla

Skyla (not to be confused with the SeaWorld/Loro Parque orca of the same name and age), was captured in Russia. Since her arrival at MarineLand, she has had four calves. Her first, in 2009, did not survive. Skoot, born in 2011, died in 2012 after being attacked and killed by Kodiak and Orion, two adult male belugas tanked with her. Skyla was extremely agitated while her calf was being bitten, shaken, and thrown against walls by the two other whales. Her third, Jetta, was born in 2014 and moved to the Mystic Aquarium in 2021, along with several other young females and one male. She had a fourth calf in 2018, who has not been named.

About Kodiak

Kodiak is one of the older males at MarineLand Canada, at only 17 years old. He was one announced calf, Kharabali, who lives at the Mystic Aquarium. He probably has more calves whose paternity has not been announced. In 2012, when he was eight years old, Kodiak and his male tankmate, Orion, killed Skoot, Skyla's one year old calf. It's unknown what was done to rectify his exceedingly violent behavior.
