Beluga Whale Sanctuary

The Beluga Whale Sanctuary, located in Heimaey, Iceland, is a sea-pen constructed for two previously captive belugas. It's the first whale sanctuary in the world, and hopes to house more belugas soon. Photo: Beluga Whale Sanctuary

About Little White

Little White and Little Gray are two female belugas who live in the only beluga sanctuary in the world, in Heimaey, Iceland. Little White is more outgoing and adventurous of the two, and is probably older.

Little Gray has lived beside Little White for her entire captive life. Little Gray has little notches in her upper lip. She is more shy and introverted than Little White.

Lotte Aquarium, South Korea: 2014

About Bella III

Bella is the last surviving beluga whale at the Lotte Aquarium in South Korea, a bit southeast of Seoul's city center. She originally lived with two other males captured around the same time and place as her, but both of them have since died, one in 2016, and the other in 2019. I do not know what their names were.

In 2021, the Lotte Hotel, which owns the whale, after reflecting on her history and current conditions decided that it would be best that she be moved to the Beluga Whale Sanctuary. She is currently undergoing preparation and training for the move and habitat change at the Lotte. It's not known when the aquarium plans on transporting her to Iceland. Little White and Little Gray's preparation period was about a year, and, with that being the only basis, I suspect Bella's will be similar.

According to the aquarium, Bella remains in good health, and they hope that her quality of life will improve in the Sanctuary, and with other belugas.
