MarineLand

MarineLand used to have many parks around the world, including locations in California and Australia. Today, the corporation has just two parks, in Ontario Canada, and Antibes France. In the past, MarineLand has been very aggressive in their breeding program, but as of 2020, both Canada and France have banned the captive breeding of orcas.

MarineLand has come under criticism for their sub-par animal care, not only of their orcas, but also of their walruses, dolphins, belugas, and seals.

MarineLand Antibes, Antibes Alpes-Maritimes, France

Inouk

Statistics

Captive born: February 23rd, 1999

Mother: Sharkane (d)

Father: Kim II (d)

Sex: Male

Age: 24

Weight: 6,200 lbs, 2,812 kilos

Length: 17.1 ft, 5.2 m

Breed: 100% Icelandic

Full Siblings: Wikie and Shouka

Paternal Siblings: Valentin (d)

About Inouk

Inouk is the oldest whale at MarineLand Antibes, and spends his time with all the other whales in the park, his sister, Wikie, and his two nephews, Moana and Keijo. In spite of being 21 years old, Inouk is smaller than many other captive male killer whales. His teeth are also exceptionally worn down. Almost all his lower teeth are completely flat and drilled. This has caused some severe pain for Inouk. Captive whales are fed frozen fish, but Inouk's must be thawed, or else the cold causes too much pain for his exposed gums. He also has been reported to have frequent respiratory tract infections, as well as candidiasis of the tongue. Inouk's poor dentition is the cause chronic pain for the whale, and I suspect it will continue to threaten his health in the coming years.

Aggressive Incidents & other injuries

Inouk has never been involved in any documented instances of violent or concerning behavior toward trainers.

Wikie

Statistics

Captive born: June 6th, 2001

Mother: Sharkane (d)

Father: Kim II (d)

Sex: Female

Age: 21

Weight: 4,500 lbs, 2,041 kilos

Length: 17.1 ft, 5.2 m

Breed: 100% Icelandic

Full Siblings: Inouk and Shouka

Paternal Siblings: Valentin (d)

Calves: Moana and Keijo

About Wikie

Wikie is the only remaining female whale at MarineLand Antibes. She has two sons, Moana and Keijo, and shows strong maternal instincts towards both of them. Moana and Keijo were born just two years apart, meaning that between the birth of Moana and the conception of Keijo there were just six months. Pregnancy that soon after birth is not observed in the wild, and could have caused some physical or mental stress for Wikie and her reproductive system.

Wikie is the first captive killer whale to have been proven to mimic human speech. She has been trained to copy the vocalizations of trainers and say specific words, as has her son, Moana.

Aggressive Incidents & other injuries

In 2009, Wikie pushed a trainer underwater when she was not asked to do this. She was still used for waterwork-style interactions after this incident.

Moana

Statistics

Captive born: March 16th, 2011

Mother: Wikie

Father: Ulises

Sex: Male

Age: 11

Weight: 1,763 lbs, 800 kilos

Length: 11.5 ft, 3.5 m

Breed: 100% Icelandic

Maternal Siblings: Keijo

Paternal Siblings: Amaya (d)

About Moana

Moana was conceived through artificial insemination, as his father Ulises lives in San Diego, California. All of the MLA orcas spend a lot of time together.

Moana is the second captive killer whale to have been proven to mimic human speech, along with his mother, Wikie. Moana can copy sounds made by trainers.

In early July of 2021, Moana was photographed with a pinkish skin infection/lesion on his white ventral patch.

Aggressive Incidents & other injuries

Moana has never been involved in any documented violent incidents with trainers.

Keijo

Statistics

Captive born: November 20th, 2013

Mother: Wikie

Father: Valentin (d)

Sex: Male

Age: 9

Weight: 330 lbs, 149 kilos

Length: 7ft, 7.1 m

Breed: 100% Icelandic

Maternal Siblings: Moana

About Keijo

Keijo's parents, Wikie and Valentin, are half siblings, which would make Keijo 12.5% inbred. However, official DNA testing has never been conducted, so there's a chance that Keijo's father could be through artificial insemination. His weight and length were also taken when he was a newborn, so he is probably significantly larger now.

Aggressive Incidents & other injuries

Keijo has never been involved in any documented violent incidents with trainers.
